WTL Round 4: vs UWC

Round 4 of the Winter Touch League saw The Kongsberg Shadows taking on the youngsters from Singapore Polytechnic.

Coming straight off a resounding victory over the youngsters from UWC the previous week - the Shadows were full of enthusiasm leading into the match. The traditional 3.5 minute team training took place however it was soon clearly obvious there was some serious issues underfoot. Numbers were definitely not the issue with the highest turnout to date. There were 12 players lined up in the the snappy Kongsberg pink jerseys at tapoff. Pink was also the color of a number of the players eye balls (i.e. bloodshot) however and it proved to be a tough day out on a sticky pitch with not enough sleep all around....

The 1st half saw try for try action, Shadows employed their very basic game plan to work the ball up the field in 3 man driving patterns on attack, then get playmakers involved in the centre to get over the line and finally use the wingers to score the touch downs. A number of opportunities went begging however due to poor hands and not being able to finish the last pass. Defence was also poor with two very soft tries in the first half being let through by some uncharacteristic lapses by players that should have known better (i.e. me). Our two little superstars from last week Mephine and Nadine had probably more sleep and less alcohol of the rest of the team together and they worked tirelessly in defence and attack all day.

Half-time and the scores were very close. Captain Dennis Marshment gave some inspiring words at half-time esp with regard to a substantial increase in the amount of effort being put in. A new subbing pattern was bought in to try to introduce some more structure into the team in the second half. The Shadows spent large amounts of time camped on their own line with some brave defending against a fairly pathetic Singapore Polytechnic attack which relied on individual steppers but were persistent none the less. We did manage to make it over the tryline a number of times however failed to convert as our carefully planned wingers were nowhere to be seen or if they were to be seen it was generally standing about 10m back from the tryline picking their noses and eating their snot.

There were one or two moments of inspiration - Steph the step focus scored a lovely touch down with his trademark prop off the left foot, Big Stu getting his balls fondled my someone half his size was also quite inspiring to see and Dave Teo new hairstyle were probably the highlights of the day on the field.

Thus the game ended with a very close loss 5-4 to a team we definitely should have beaten by at least 5 touchdowns. Food for thought and things to build on for next week.

Highlight off the field was definitely the after match team building event held at the former 'Just Wine' bar which now has a new name which I also cannot remember. On our first visit we managed to get them to change their opening time from 3PM on a Saturday to 2PM to accommodate our team so please make an effort if you have time to pop over for a drink after touch each week at this bar and a chat with your team-mates. Good fun had by all however we would have to ask Luke not to wear such sexually erotic singlets next time, could Sean please stop encouraging our teams athletes to smoke, and could Stuart stop staring at the winelist all afternoon only interrupted by opportunities to talk about volleyball.

Team awards for the week:

Wanker of the week: - The wingers in the second half whose role was clearly explained (to stand wide, keep up with the play and score the tries). However 5 times in the second half when our midfild playmakers got over the line the wingers were NOWHERE to be seen. Then after the match they had the audacity to complain that they did not like playing on the wing as it was boring and there was nothing happening!

Moron of the week - Dal who suggested early last week he wanted to organise a social get together after this weeks game and then 2 hours before the match pulled out with a broken eyelash

Superstar of the week - Big Stu whose desperate Defence on the tryline saved numerous tries

Hero of the week - David Teo who actually turned up AND paid his subs!! Big week for Dave - next week could he go one better and actually play well???

Team man of the week - Gareth - for volunteering to wash the team jerseys... AGAIN - good work bud!

Commitment of the week - Salty Sammy Haggag's WIFE - Salty Sammy dragged his heavily pregnant wife down in the stinking hot sun with no shade and seating to watch us run around for 40 minutes- Commitment!!.(At least I think it was your wife Sammy?)

WTL Round 3: vs UWC

Round 3 of the Singapore Touch League saw the Kongsberg Shadows take on the youngsters from United World College. From the outset this was going to be a match of youth and fitness versus age and experience.

With the average age of the UWC boys being around 15 years old, and the Shadows average age being close to double that - speed, fitness and agility were never going to be on our side.Never the less a very wise training session for 3.5 minutes before taking the field proved to be a technically astute decision, and moulded what was potentially an uncohesive, directionless bunch of fat unfit mainly injured or sick has been rugby players with no idea how to play touch (Apart from Mephine and Nadine!) into a superior, tightly gelled touch force!!

The 1st Half

Technically the youngsters from UWC had little idea - and the Shadows did well to contain them to only 1 try in the first half to 4 scored by the Shadows.
The last 10 minutes of the second half were always going to be the concern however and with severe exhaustion setting in, the Shadows stiff defensive line crumbled like the Wallaby forward pack on Saturday night and they let in 3 more tries. However some silky skill and good attacking work close to the try line by mighty Mephine Ong allowed the Shadows to dot down 3 more tries with the final score being 7 - 4.

Team awards for the week:

Moron of the week - Mephine for forgetting to bring TWO team jerseys to the game (one was her own) - next time you do this Meph you will have to play in your sports bra only ok.

Superstar of the week - Nadine whose little legs were like steel springs hurling her all over the pitch - trule inspirational

Hero of the week - Dal whose desperate diving defense saved at least 3 tries

Team man of the week - Gareth - for volunteering to wash the team jerseys - good work bud!

Comittment of the week - Split between Dennis Marshment and Sean - Dennis played with stiches and Sean played with bird flu

Wanker of the week - David Teo who proved as again like last season is an unreliable lazy little liar and has one last chance to turn up this weekend with his jersey boots and money or he will be AXED!

PROFILE
Kevin"Almost Fight" is the current World Faux Fighting Super Heavyweight Champion. Hailing from the tough neighbourhood of Ang Mo Kio, Singapore. Kevin has risen through the ranks, from cook to chef before a change of interest saw him move from the Kitchen to the Vine Yards and Wineries.
When he is not in the Faux Ring, his many hobbies are touch football, cooking , rugby and lastly Partying with buddy, Tsunami(The Faux Moari) & others.
Despite his ever changing hairstyles and frequent fashion misses, this hearthrob has never failed to be a hit with the ladies.

He is famous for going all berserk and screaming at the top of his voice. This lethal move-"Roid Rage"- causes his opponents to be in a daze before he finishes them off. Unfortunately for him and his teamates, this often has a friendly-fire effect on the touch football field.

*All brands refused to be named fearing a drop in sales.

The Beautiful Boxer
As we all know, most guys in the fighting industry will relate to masculine factors drawing them to the sport. Well.... most guys but Loo. It is no secret that Kevin is in touch with his le femme fatale side. Tattoed on his chest and arms are the name and face of Nong Tum- the Transgender former Muay Thai Champion. (see above photo)

"She has gone through many adversities and have overcome trans-gender bias. It is not easy being different. In some ways, I am similar."
Roids Loo, in a recent interview with Shadow Times, when asked why he idolises Nong.

TRAINING FOR THE VIRGIN FIGHT
Come late-May. Kevin will relinquish The World Faux Fighting Championship and for the first time ever, step into the Muay Thai Ring. For months now, in The SCC, located deep in the concrete jungle of the CBD, "Almost Fight" has been furiously honing his punches, knee blocks and kicks. These are some of his training images.

Fans Reaction
"You sure anot?? Different type of ring, you know? He might actually have to swing." , "Virgin meh? I don't believe in fairy tales", "Come ah! come ah!....wahahaha!", "Seriously?? I would pay to see him fight", "He wouldn't make a pretty Katoey, would he?" These were reactions to the fact that Kevin "Almost Fight" Loo is finally going to put an end to critics condemning his already tarnished reputation of always being pulled away from a fight at the last second.

Animated Bookies
Bookies have reacted immediately and have been flooded by phone calls just minutes after the statement made by the press. Said Mr David Teo(not his real name) "My handphone keeps on ringing, my email inbox flooded and my fax machine broke down..... **bei****bye! I got all sorts of funny requests for odds! STL Round 5: vs 1-Keg

Saturday 5th April: Kongsberg Shadows vs 1-keg

The second to last game of round two of the summer league saw the Shadows take on 1-keg. So far this season the Shadows have been working hard on developing the basic patterns in attack and defence which must be done effectively before we can move onto bigger things. Thus the game against 1-keg, was another great opportunity to build on these patterns and gain cohesion as a team. With the best turn out of the season a subbing pattern of one for one was able to be implemented meaning that there would be no problem's with fitness which have hindered the team in the previous weeks. The game started slowly, and early on signs of poor ball handling were to plague the team through out the game. However the shadows dominated the first half still and came through to lead 3 - 0 at half time. There were glimpses of some good passages of play in the first half, however a lack of cohesion, poor ball handling, and poor execution of the basics meant we were making it harder work than it needed to be.

Half time words from super coach spelt out two main things:
- Get the driving patterns going, with a small drag out - from the runner and a half pass back into the dummy half to break the defensive flyer they were sending up
- Defence - need to push off the player in defence after you make the touch and use their momentum to help you get back on-side.

The second half saw more opportunities created to score but once again poor hands let us down. 1-keg had huge holes opening up on defence especially through simple drives through the midfield. The Shadows were making easy yards all the way to 1-keg 5m line, only to run out of idea's or bomb certain try's through poor handling. Over all though it was a great turn-out on the day, everybody had fun, and a good confidence builder going into next weeks last match of the round.

Special mention through out he game must be given to:

1) 'Su the Step' - Tsunami - for some great stepping to beat the first defender, however consequently had brain explosion and tries to step the next 5 players instead of capitalising on breaking the defensive line and taking a quick dump to set up his dummy half and the next passage of play.

2) David 'Hands like a digital watch' Teo - who would not have been able to catch a cold let alone the rugby ball during Saturday's game.

3) Andre, 'please run around me' Bartlett - who for the second time this season showed what a nice guy he is by allowing the opposition player with no space to work in whatsoever to run around the outside of him!
4) Paul 'check out my new haircut' Foster whose typical superb positive on the field attitude is an example to us all and far outweighs the factors that:
a) it what his first game and had no idea what was happening,
b) he tried to score a try on the 5m line
This weeks game versus the competition leaders will be much tougher. Defence needs to be much tighter which will be worked on tonight at training - see you there? Or be a.......

Try Scorers: Axe (2), Alex (2), Leow Wei Hong, Jonty

Shadow of the Day: 'Show-me-the-money' Axe

STL Round 3: vs Pukeko

Every defeat, every heartbreak, every loss, contains its own seed, its own lesson on how to improve your performance the next time.-- Og Mandino

Two frogs fell into a bowl of cream. One didn't panic, he relaxed and drowned. The other kicked and struggled so much that the cream turned to butter and he walked out.

We will get better.....

Why is cohesion so important in team sports?

It takes a while in any team sport to build up cohesion and understanding between members in a team. We often hear so many times when coaches try to keep the same team playing whether it is soccer/football, rugby union or league or any sport for that matter.

A fine example of this can be seen on some touch rugby days where a team is strung together on the fly. Each player has their own style. Some people cannot help but run sideways, others run predictably straight while good players run into gaps with hands on the ball keeping the defender guessing.

Granted touch rugby is played mostly on a social level where a whole bunch of people gather and have a run around but it is still very interesting to observe different players, team dynamics and people’s attitudes.

The basic concept in touch rugby is to gain the meters in the first 3 or so touches and then spin it wide. When done effectively, gaps open up naturally as it leaves the defensive team in disarray. However, there are times when huge gaps of opportunities appear in center field, on the first touch that appears too good to resist. The ball is spun wide, fumbled, and turned over. This often results in a whole bunch of meaningless shouting and cursing.

General consensus on having a “wild” runner who ducks and weaves all over the place is split. It is good in that it can break up the defensive line, exploit gaps in different areas but againsts a well organized team, it could result in a whole lotta wasted energy. It also leaves the team mates of the attacking team just wonder what the heck the guy is up too!

Observing and understanding the characteristics of your team mates is very important and leads to an unspoken understanding that can help win games. From observing various players of the Shanghai’s touch team and those going to Singapore for the touch tournament, some players make use of the inside pass very effectively. More often than not the gaps seem to open up here. Others tend to run into gaps very effectively drawing 2 defenders and creating space on the outside. The wrap around or double round is not often used but when it is, it seems to be very effective.

Over running the mark is very common and allows the defense to reorganize. In high level matches the defense ends up constantly back tracking which is very hard work as leg muscles are made for running forwards, not backwards. Understanding should be maintained as in many situations there is no dummy half present and someone has to run in and pick it up. Supporting players should advise by calling out “take the touch” or “go left”.

As always, many things are always easier said than done. It takes a lot of time and practise to get use to each others play and style. With this in mind, do more observing, more communicating and less meaningless shouting next time you are on the touch field.

STL Round 1: vs 6-pack

Kongsberg Shadows gave their all to emulate last week's performance only to be let down by lack of experience and flaring tempers

The battle was already almost half won when a record breaking 12 players turned up, a flattering number indeed.
The mood in the Shadows' camp was all positive and gay as the lads bantered jokes while gearing up and "marked territories" all over Turf City side roads.
A wonderful start indeed.
Damien's boisterous presence at the sideline was definitely missed but as the game progressed the team found a surrogate in Loo. (more on this later)

Do you know....
Touch Referee, as you all must know, is a sensitive being, they are not used to criticism and quite emotionally unstable.
Therefore, in any circumstances or any time throughout the game, they shall not be judged nor be criticized upon. Such is the law of the game....
Otherwise, you may be asked to take a few minutes off the field for reflection (aka Sin Bin)

Anyway, back to the game.... or a bit of pre-game preview first...
6-pack, the 2006 National Touch League champions & 2007 finalist, has a lot of burden in maintaining their elite status in the Touch community
Kongsberg Shadows on the other hand is a newly formed team made up of Rugby enthusiasts who simply love playing the game and enjoy each other's company
There was supposed to be a huge handicap given the background of the team

Nevertheless, right from the get go, Shadows took the game literally to 6-pack's throat and made a few opportunities which were not capitalized
Experience played a huge part indeed as 6-pack soon settled down and flashed a blinding light over the Shadows for the 1st try.
Frustrations soon set in and the guys began a verbal assault on the referee. Not a wise choice ... (as they have got the whistle & see rule above)
Wise cautioning by our experience Coach, Grant "Axe" Rawlinson soon put things in perspectives
Realizing that we could not win the game by shouting at the Refs, the lads pulled a collective effort to create the 1st beautiful try....started by D.Teo's nice clean dump and hands down the line through Loo, Su & finished off by Mephine
The rest of the 1st half was pretty much a see-saw battle......thus ended with a 2-2 scoreline

The 2nd half was more organized after a pep talk by Axe.....
Mephine, Jonty & Rob were critical and precise in his dumping allowing the platform for quick attacks & recycle
Suhaimi, Alex & Andre were work-horses in defence, a critical aspect in the match or any match for that matter
Derelyn was a commander in communication
Loo was sashaying in his new haircut
Kenny & David kept things real and lifted the team up by sticking to basic Touch Rugby game play
and Bryan, though he was quite lost throughout the game, tried hard and had quite a number of breaks for the Tryline. He also gave the team some light moments when he voluntary rolled the ball. Realizing only moments later that the drills we did earlier require us to actually touch the opponent, embarrassingly yelled "Aiyar, play on lah"

Alas, the pep talk during the half-time break felled on deaf ears as we turned our verbal assault on our own teammates with every inexperience mistakes we made.
The Shadows could not recover in time and their confidence was slowly chipped away by their own heavy criticisms
The game ended 5-3 to 6-pack

Try Scorers: Mephine, David Teo & Kenny
Shadow of the Day: David Teo, for scoring the 2nd try and creating the 3rd try
Dick of the Day: It was a contention between Andre (for getting burned) & Bryan, for the voluntary roll ball then "Aiyar, plan on lah!" remarks. Bryan won the Dick of the Day hands down

As we do not have any photos nor vids for this game (coming soon for the next), I have attached a photo of our own week 2 Shadow of the Day during his Touch Rugby heyday
